My name is Joe McGuinty and I run Floor Techie. I’ve been working with floors for over 12 years. I started as a flooring contractor, primarily in materials selection. Then, I switched careers into accounting, so my wife and I began buying, renovating, and re-selling homes on the side. We’re based in beautiful British Columbia, where we’ve learned how new floors can significantly increase the value of a home.
A few years ago, I became a dad and started running out of time for new projects. I started this site to stay on top of changes in the industry, channel my passion for great flooring, and pass along the many things I’ve learned along the way.
Floors have many purposes for many people. They can be a striking piece of decor, a welcoming embrace to start your day, or sometimes, a less-than-ideal bathroom for your furry friends. I take pride in helping people understand what floors fit their purpose, and how they can maintain them for the long life they deserve.
I live just outside Vancouver, BC, with my wife and two young kids. When not discussing flooring or accounting, you’ll find me at the park with my family, cycling along the river, or relaxing over a drink. But wherever I am, I always welcome a chat about flooring. So take a look through my favourite guides below, then feel free to message me with your questions, suggestions, or (friendly) challenges any time.
